5 Best Restaurants in Deerfield

A restaurant search in Deerfield quickly spills over into Northbrook and Wheeling. That is simply how dining works in this part of the North Shore: the towns sit close together, and a place ten minutes down Dundee Road may be more convenient than one with a Deerfield address.

A short drive changes the menu completely. One place brings out Georgian dumplings filled with hot broth, another bakes its croissants on site, and farther along there is karaoke waiting after dinner. Deerfield itself covers breakfast and modern American dining particularly well. None of these places requires a special occasion, although RedBottle can easily handle one.

Red Bottle: Dinner, Drinks and a Late Finish

Address: 401 E Dundee Rd, Wheeling, IL 60090

Hours: Mon–Thu and Sun, 12 PM–12 AM; Fri–Sat, 12 PM–2 AM

Google Maps rating: 4.7/5

Usual spend: $20–80 per guest

Specials: Full bar, live music, karaoke, trivia and private events

Red Bottle makes the most sense when dinner is only one part of the evening. On Fridays and Saturdays the restaurant stays open until 2 AM, and depending on the night, there may be live music, karaoke or trivia after the plates are cleared. For birthdays and dinners with friends, that saves the familiar discussion about where everyone should go next.

There are more than 60 dishes, and the menu wanders quite happily between shawarma, beef stroganoff, stone-baked pizza, pasta, steaks, seafood and pork medallions. It is an unusually broad mix, but that works in Red Bottle’s favor when six people arrive with six different ideas about dinner.

The Dark Side of the Sea is a substantial seafood platter, placed in the centre and shared by the table. People reach across for what they want, pass pieces around and usually spend some time discussing what they have tried. The roast beef salad with arugula is less filling, while pizza, pasta and steak suit diners who already know what they came for. Red Bottle prepares its desserts in-house too.

Red Bottle shows its character most clearly when the table is larger and the evening has no strict ending. That combination of food, drinks and entertainment is what distinguishes it from other restaurants near Deerfield.

Field House Kitchen + Bar: A Proper Dinner Without the Formalities

Address: 695 Deerfield Rd, Deerfield, IL 60015

Hours: Sun–Wed, 11 AM–9 PM; Thu–Sat, 11 AM–10 PM

OpenTable rating: 4.7/5

Usual spend: Up to $30 per guest

Specials: Full bar, patio, happy hour and a private room for up to 45 guests

Field House Kitchen + Bar is polished enough for an evening reservation, though nobody needs to dress for the occasion. The high ceilings, dark timber and deep-blue details give the room a finished look. It still feels like a neighborhood place, especially around the bar.

The food moves between casual American favorites and plates that call for a slower dinner. The FH Burger and carne asada tacos belong to the first camp. Salmon piccata, brick chicken, ribeye and branzino sit at the other end of the menu. Lobster turns up twice: in a roll and in truffle gnocchi. The gnocchi is rich enough that a light starter would be the sensible companion.

Wine and craft beer share the bar with a full cocktail list, rather than appearing as a few obligatory choices beneath the food menu. Happy hour runs from 3 to 6 PM, Sunday through Friday, with seating at the bar and on the patio.

A private room for up to 45 guests makes Field House a strong choice for larger celebrations and office dinners without the impersonal feel of a banquet hall.

Fork & Flour Co.: Come for Breakfast, Leave With Pastries

Address: 2750 Dundee Rd, Unit 4, Northbrook, IL 60062

Hours: Tue–Sun, 9 AM–6:30 PM; Mon, closed

Google Maps rating: 4.9/5

Usual spend: $10–20 per guest

Specials: Scratch kitchen, house-baked bread, vegan food, Wi-Fi, pickup and delivery

Fork & Flour Co. is half café, half working bakery. The division hardly matters once you are inside, since bread and pastry find their way into much of the menu anyway.

Morning is when the display case looks most tempting. It may hold croissants, Danishes, scones, muffins and morning buns, with the sort of choice that makes ordering only coffee feel slightly pointless. Breakfast sandwiches are assembled when ordered rather than sitting ready under a heat lamp. Coffee and espresso are available, of course, but the baking is what gives this place its identity.

For lunch, the kitchen moves on to soups, grain bowls and salads. Sandwiches are served on bread made on the premises, a small detail that has a real effect on an otherwise simple meal. Savory pastries provide another option when a full plate seems unnecessary. Seasonal ingredients are sourced locally when possible, so not everything remains unchanged from January to July.

Daniel Baranes Sherman runs the pastry program. His French-style desserts include macarons, éclairs, profiteroles and fruit tarts, along with tiramisu and changing seasonal items. Some pastries are dairy-free.

Kitchen House Cafe: Georgian Food Worth Sharing

Address: 341 E Dundee Rd, Wheeling, IL 60090

Hours: Mon–Thu, 11 AM–9 PM; Fri–Sat, 10 AM–11 PM; Sun, 10 AM–8 PM

Google Maps rating: 4.6/5

Usual spend: $20–30 per guest

Specials: Vegetarian options, high chairs, pickup and delivery

Georgian food is not common around Deerfield, and the menu at Kitchen House Cafe goes well beyond the predictable café combination of burgers, wraps and salads.

Khachapuri is an easy place to begin. The warm, cheese-filled bread is made for pulling apart and passing around. Khinkali require a little more care. These pleated dumplings hold both filling and broth, which escapes quickly if they are attacked with a knife and fork. Pick one up by the top, take a small bite and drink the broth first. The doughy stem is useful as a handle and does not have to be eaten.

Ordering both dishes for the table makes more sense than choosing between them. Grilled meat, soup, salads and vegetable plates can be added depending on how many people are sharing. Vegetarian customers have several possibilities rather than one hastily included substitute.

Kitchen House works just as well for a family dinner as it does for a quick lunch. High chairs are available for younger children, and most people can expect to spend around $20–30 per person. You can sit down and eat there, pick up an order on the way home or have it delivered.

Egg Harbor Cafe: Breakfast With More Than the Standards

Address: 740 Waukegan Rd, Suite 103, Deerfield, IL 60015

Hours: Daily, 7 AM–2 PM

Google Maps rating: 4.7/5

Usual spend: $20–30 per guest

Specials: Children’s menu, gluten-free dishes, seasonal specials, Wi-Fi and outdoor seating

Breakfast groups are difficult — someone wants pancakes, another insists on eggs, and at least one person has decided that noon is close enough to lunch. Egg Harbor Cafe has built its menu around this minor weekly disagreement.

Omelets, Benedicts, skillets and scramblers take care of the expected breakfast orders. The choices become more interesting with chilaquiles and shakshuka, both welcome when toast and potatoes sound too familiar. Greek yogurt power bowls provide a lighter alternative. Customers can also alter many wraps and egg dishes by choosing different vegetables, meats, cheeses and sauces.

Gluten-free food receives more attention than the usual single item at the bottom of a menu. Children have their own selection, and seasonal dishes are added at different points in the year. The result is a broad menu, although it remains recognizably breakfast rather than trying to cover every meal of the day.

This branch opened in Deerfield Square in December 2021, following the move from Lincolnshire. Outdoor seating is available during better weather. Online ordering and delivery are available too.

Deerfield may be quiet, but eating around here rarely gets repetitive. Northbrook and Wheeling are close enough that nobody thinks twice about driving a few extra minutes for breakfast, dinner or a place worth staying at for the evening. That small radius covers everything from fresh pastry and Georgian cooking to cocktails, seafood and late-night karaoke — plenty of choice without having to head into Chicago every time you want something different.
